Trump Admin Creates Web Portal for Supporters to Complain About Getting Banned on Social Media

Donald Trump has made absolutely no secret of his feelings on free speech: He hates it when it’s not servile paeans to him and his agenda. Facebook shuts down its ‘Bonfire’ group video chat app

Facebook has a habit of cloning popular apps, or integrating popular features from its competitors into its own platforms. Houseparty is a group video calling app that was fairly popular a few years ago, and Facebook released its own clone in 2017 as ‘Bonfire.’ Now the company has shut down Bonfire, and it never even arrived in the United States.
Bonfire has already been removed from the Play Store, and the company told The Verge in a statement, “We’ll incorporate elements of what we learned into other current and future products.” Bonfire’s main draw was that it used rooms that people could…

After an Easter terror attack, Sri Lanka cut access to social media

Sri Lanka restricted access to social media following a terror attack that left more than 200 people dead and at least 450 injured. Eight bombs exploded in three churches and three luxury hotels on Easter Sunday.
According to The New York Times, restricted sites include Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp, Viber, and YouTube.
“This was a unilateral decision,” presidential adviser Harindra Dassanayake told the Times, explaining officials worried that the spread of misinformation and hate speech could incite violence.
The move isn’t a first for the country — in 2018, Sri Lankan officials blocked access to social media when viral posts on Facebook called…

Facebook investors desperate to boot Mark Zuckerberg from chairmanship

The call to oust Mark Zuckerberg is coming from inside the house.
A group of investors have teamed up in an effort to replace the Facebook CEO and board chairman with an independent voice. The plan, put forth in an April 12 SEC filing, doesn’t mince words in its critique of the 34-year-old fan of smoked meats.
“[Zuckerberg’s] dual-class shareholdings give him approximately 60% of Facebook’s voting shares, leaving the board, even with a lead independent director, with only a limited ability to check Mr. Zuckerberg’s power,” reads the statement supporting the proposal. “We believe this weakens Facebook’s governance and oversight of management.”…

Guardian report on leaked documents shows the pains Facebook will take to fight privacy laws

According to a recent report by The Guardian based on internal documents leaked from a court case in California, Facebook has been lobbying and pressuring representatives and politicians from over 35 countries in its attempts to fight privacy laws. That much would seem pretty obvious, but the details revealed by these documents imply a greater degree of collaboration than you may expect, and potential quid pro quo actions by politicians.

A memo authored by Facebook employee Marne Levine from 2013 included in the documents is alleged to reveal communications implying collaboration between then Irish prime minister Enda Kenney and Facebook, showing Facebook’s…
